A fortnight ago it was Cy Twombly, but tonight we say goodbye instead to Lucian Freud - Sigmund’s grandson - who the Guardian reports has died aged 88.
In contrast with Twombly, I’m rather unfamiliar with his work, but one painting I have enjoyed on several occasions is his Interior at Paddington (1951, above). The weird portrait of photographer Harry Diamond forms part of the University of Liverpool collection, and is regularly exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery. It’s both alluring and disconcerting - presenting a intriguing oddly-proportioned, cigarette-smoking character whilst leaving him mysteriously unnamed. His gaze is strong but his stance seems to have been adapted to ride the uneven carpet.
